Girls Who Grind Coffee - Costa Rica

It's certainly been a while since we've featured Girls Who Grind Coffee on The Coffee Life (if you want to check out posts previously on GWGC click here)

Now if you've somehow been living under a rock and don't know who the wonderful ladies over at GWGC are, let me introduce them:

"We are an all female specialty coffee roasters based in the wild South-West of England. We source our coffees specifically and exclusively from women producers, seeking out those coffees that are creating positive change through the empowerment of women.

We're here to do two things. Create awesome tasting coffee and empower women in the coffee industry. And have fun. That's three things. Deal with it."

Casey, originally from Upstate New York, and Fi, originally from Melbourne Australia, met and became from in now hometown of Frome, Somerset.

"While our kids played, we often got chatting about our love of coffee and our various experiences within the industry, discovering that we both felt as though there was definitely room for change and improvement, in short - we wanted ti see more equality!

As women, we had felt a little pushed out of an industry that we had loved so much and had so much to give to. Rather than simply complain about it, we thought we would make the change we wanted to see! We wanted to create an industry where women felt empowered and celebrated for everything they bring to the table and have their voices heard. Hence why we made the conscious decision to focus solely on buying coffee from female producers, sharing their stories to the world, giving them the recognition they rightly deserve for the incredible work that they do."

The Coffee

After having her first baby, Monse unsurprisingly didn't have much time to process a lot of coffee. She did however process a tiny lot specifically for Girls Who Grind Coffee.

"We are incredibly proud to partner with Bean Voyage and bring you this wonderful for coffee from innovative, first-get producer Monse Prado."

Bean Voyage is a feminist organisation building an equitable value chain with smallholder women farmers in Costa Rica.

After working in San Jose, Monse returned to Tarrazu to live with her partner. As a young professional with endless dreams and strong work ethics, Monse began her journey into the coffee production world. Her partner's family have been life-long coffee producers and she wanted to help them to see that there is more to coffee production beyond farming. Her partner, an agricultural engineer, designed a micro-mill for Monse to manage everything on her own. This innovative micro-mill has a uniquely vertical design and is certified by the local government for its efficient water and energy usage. Monse's ethos for Ditso is built around coffee quality and ecological preservation and is a member of the NAMA Cafe Project, a unique worldwide project that seeks to measure and mitigate the environmental impact of coffee activity. As one of the region's younger coffee producers, she collaborates with the others in the group to bring more innovative ideas.

"I believe that the constant challenge as a woman is to be able to show that we can contribute to the world of coffee and develop in the activity, and that we can also do it in an excellent way" Monse says.

Let's brew

Brewer: V60

Recipe: 15g / 225g

Ratio: 1:15

Total Brew Time: 3 Minutes

I had first tried this coffee at London Coffee Festival, and fell in love with its fruitiness, and the first few times I tried to brew this, I was disappointed that it didn't taste as good as it did at the festival (clearly out of practise with brewing) but as I experimented more with recipes and water temperature, I found the beautiful flavours that I first tasted from this coffee.

The brew came out looking like sweet tea, which only added to the excitement of drinking this cup. The first thing that hit was the zesty acidity, and definite lemon mouthfeel with a stone fruit undertone.

As it cooled, it became more defined in peach flavour, and a super sweet melon taste at the back of the mouth. It was a delicious and smooth cup (and went down way too quickly!)

Girls Who Grind Coffee - Ethiopian Decaf

In yesterdays blog post (if you missed it, read here) I explained how we need to stop the stigma on decaf coffee - and today, I am telling you about one of my favourite decaf coffees I've come across.

It's of course from Girls Who Grind Coffee and I'm sad to say that it's actually no longer available on their website (I'm sorry I didn't do this post sooner!!!) but they do have a delicious decaf Dr Congo, which is equally as delicious!

Ethiopia Decaf
Haricha Wareda, Godeo Zone
Natural / Kana Yirgacheffe / Heirloom
Decaf Process / Sparkling Water Process

Taste Notes - Intense + Fruity, Lime, Cashew, Rum + Raisin

This coffee also supports the Girls Gotta Run Foundation, a non profit organisation that empowers girls in Ethiopia through running and education - read more about the Foundation here

The recipe I used to brew

I brewed it through V60, using 24g of coffee, 315g of water (with a 30 second bloom with 75g of water) and a total brew time of 3 minutes.

If someone gave me this coffee and just told me it was a normal caffeinated Ethiopian, I honestly would none be the wiser, it's freaking delicious

This brew came out so smooth, with subtle cacao notes, and strong, prominent fruity notes, with no acidity.
As it cooled it became more citrus'y with a little citrus acidity, and slightly more harsher cacao notes, but even still, delicious.

Like I said in yesterdays post that now decaf is becoming more widely spread, and people are educating themselves on how to dial in and brew decaf correctly, it can be so good.
I had at least 5 DM's on Instagram last night saying how they'd been given a decaf coffee by a friend/co-worker and until they'd drunk it all, they weren't told it was decaf, because it was -that- good.

I think as more and more people talk about decaf, more people educate themselves and others on decaf, we can stop being so critical of people who order decaf.

I'll be back with more caffeinated reviews soon, but for now. Try some decaf, educate yourself on how good decaf coffee can be.

Girls Who Grind Coffee - Honduras Microlot

Well it's certainly been a hot minute since I've blogged about Girls Who Grind Coffee
And I'm actually very late in blogging this beauty, as it's one of the ones I purchased in late 2018 - but better late than never right?

Los Limos, Corquin, Copan Finca San Rafael
Macerated Natural / Organic Parainema
Complex and Floral, Mango and Passionfruit Pavlova.
Good Vibes Only

Click here to find out more about Norma and her farm

The Recipe I Used -

I've also been playing around with an app called Coppee and I'm going to do a full blog posts on coffee apps soon.

I've been loving playing around with v60 recipes recently, and every recipe I've tried with the Honduras comes out pretty beautiful

(please ignore the fact I'm still wearing christmas pyjamas)

Super fruity, tangy and sour cherry notes, with aromatic floral notes.
Deep and dark fruity notes with next to no acidity, even when cooled.
A really bold coffee, super delicious, a really good pick-me-up.

2019 is going to be another awesome year for the girls, and I am so excited to watch them grow further into their amazing coffee journey, if somehow you've never checked them out you can find them linked below.

November Favourites 2018

Another month has passed us by, and we're now well on the way to Christmas (woohooooo!!!)
If you missed my coffee and a chat post (read that here) I said how I wanted to start doing more lifestyle posts, including monthly favourites.

So without further or do, lets get into my very first favourites blogpost, including everything I have been absolutely loving through November.

V60's

- v60's are something I have a love/hate relationship with, and ever since buying my aeropress earlier this year, the v60 took an immediate back seat.
But since working at a place that we do v60's on a daily, I've definitely been loving them again, playing around with recipes, and loving the taste profiles coming from the coffees.

Heist Chocolate Handies

- I discovered these a few months back because of both Fi + Casey over at Girls Who Grind Coffee and James from Untold Coffee and I never originally planned to buy them as I don't tend to reach for hot chocolate at home, but the lovely James sent me a sample with box number 4 of the coffee club, and I was hooked.
You only need about 4-6 little handies to make a hot chocolate, depending on your taste preference, but either way, it comes out so creamy, and so, so yummy, and especially since it's been getting a bit colder I've been loving tucking up in bed with a hot water bottle, hot chocolate and a book

Candles

- I have a weird little obsession with candles at the moment, and I'm not really sure where it has come from. I don't know if it's just this time of year or what, I just freaking love candles.
Ones that I am particularly loving at the moment are:
Christmas Eve by Yankee Candle
Christmas Tree by Wickford & Co
I've also been loving all the mini Wickford & Co candles, and I think I have them in every scent they could ever come in

You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero

- I actually picked up this book in a charity shop for £1.25, I didn't originally plan on reading it so soon, because I'm in the middle of another book still, but I took it with me to a hospital appointment that ended up being around 6 hours, and I'm glad I took it. Anyone who is struggling with "being you" I highly, highly recommend this book. It's informative, funny, witty and such an amazing read, and I'm actually going to read it again, just so I can highlight some of the quotes and quotations she uses in the book.

Polariod Wall

- I recently redecorated my room, it used to be pastel pink, and it was just very dated and I found it to not really feel like my room, so I gave it a bit of a make-over, painted the walls white, and became absolute white trash with a polariod wall. I am in LOVE with this wall, and I do plan on expanding it quite a bit (maybe when I make more friends lol)
It's so nice just to wake up and look over at all the photos and memories that are now up on my wall (probably forever, they stick like crazy)

Girls Who Grind Coffee - El Salvador Honey Processed

- Although I loved all 3 of the El Salvador coffees in the Girls Who Grind Triptych, the honey processed one really stood out for me flavour wise, before this year I don't think I'd properly tried a honey processed coffee, and it quickly has become my favourite coffee to try and source to try out.
I did an entire blog post on this coffee if you want a more in depth description including the taste profiles, read here

Untold Coffee - Jeremy Abadi, Colombia

- Again this is a coffee that has truly blown me away with the taste profile and the amount of recipes it works with, I'm also in belief that there are only a few bags left for sale on Untold right now - there will be a link below to that
If you wanted to read another in depth review on this coffee, read here

Untold Coffee Box 4

Now a fair warning, this box is an absolute beauty

This box contained a hefty 6 (!!!!) coffees

4 from Girls Who Grind Coffee, and 2 from Untold

(James also really kindly sent me a sample of the Heist hot
chocolate handies (which are yum!))

Were going to start with the Girls Who Grind Coffee - simply because, I've done a whole other blog post on the 3 El Salvadors -
Read that here

I ended up doing a giveaway with the 3 El Salvadors because I didn't want them to go to waste, and I definitely couldn't get through 2 bags of each!
So they were packed up and sent to another home to be enjoyed by someone else (lucky them!!)

Guatemala

Region: San Antonio Huista, Huehuetenago Guatemala
Varietal: Pache, Bourbon, Caturra
Process: Washed
Flavour Notes: Cherry Pie, Vanilla Cream

This delicious little number, was super fruity, stone fruits to be specific, and hella smooth, with next to no acidity, and had really sweet, syrup-y undertones, I mean what more could you ask for? Guatemalan is definitely up there in my top 5 go to coffees, and this definitely makes the cut.

Untold Coffee

Jeremy Abadi

Region: Valle Del Cauca, Colombia
Varietal: Castillo
Process: Washed
Flavour Notes: Milk Chocolate, Caramel, Tangerine

As soon as I took a sip, chocolate notes hit me in the best way, it's not very often you get a coffee that has the most delicious, defining chocolate notes, but damn this is it. with a sweet after taste, this is definitely my new go to "pick me up" coffee for the afternoon.

San Luis Community Microlot

Region: Tarrazú Co-operative, San Luis, Costa Rica
Varietal: Caturra + Catuai
Process: Washed
Flavour Notes: Milk Chocolate, Orange

Again this coffee had a lot of chocolatey notes as well, but with loads of citrus undertones, (like a chocolate orange in coffee form!!!) it's got a slight acidity to it, which I really love in a citrus coffee because it pairs so well. It's also one of those coffees that has a taste note that I literally cant put my finger on what it is.. Anyone willing to give me sensory lessons because honestly I suck.

As usual I used the same measurements I have been for every single box whilst doing these mini reviews for the boxes

Aeropress, inverted
16g of coffee
245ml of water
30 second bloom
1 minute 30 brew time
30 second plunge
